Roopkund, Uttarakhand

Situated at around 16500 ft above the sea level, this spot is popularly known as the Lake of Skeletons. As per the reports, the skeletal remains were first noticed here in 1942, when the harsh summer started melting the ice. A large number of human skeletons floating and lying haphazardly along the edges of the lake was first noticed by a British forest guard. Initially, it was believed to be the remains of Japanese soldiers who were killed during war, but in 2004, it was discovered that the remains date back to 850 AD. Since then, several theories have been in place to explain it, but people are still searching for answers.

Kongka La, Ladakh

This spot lies in the disputed border of India and China, and is one of the world’s most inaccessible places. In 1962, armies of both India and China were engaged in a severe conflict, after which both the countries entered into an agreement that no one will be allowed to patrol the region, but monitor it from a distance. After this, a popular belief floated that stated that this spot is a hidden base of UFOs. It’s believed that since the area has forever remained a no man’s land due to its territorial limits, the UFOs have chosen it as their operational base.

Reportedly, many have witnessed UFOs here, and both the Indian and Chinese Governments are aware of these developments.

Jatinga, Assam

It’s a small village in Assam, where people experience a phenomenon that is weird yet mysterious. The said phenomenon is mass bird suicide. As per the reports, this mysterious incident takes place every year, between the months of September and November. During this time, hundreds of local and migratory birds fly and crash themselves into the trees and buildings for no apparent reasons. Scientists have still not been able to explain why such a phenomenon occurs here, while locals opine that it’s the handiwork of evil spirits.

If reports are to go by, Kodinhi is now home to more than 200 pairs of twins, and a certain number of triplets too. One more weird fact is Kodinhi’s women, who end up getting married outside the village, also give birth to twins or triplets.

The Indian Ghost Town of Bhangarh, Rajasthan is one of the scariest places in India to visit, in addition to being one of the most abandoned places in India. However, this tag has not perturbed visitors from making frequent trips to this ghost town.

 Located near a famous forest in the area, this town is now slowly luring visitors from around the area, and country, to visit it. However, it should be noted that if you decide to visit the town after sunset, you will be not be allowed. In fact, there is a strict warning that it is out of bounds after the sun sets.

The story which this town is well-known for tells the tale of how a magician who was in love with the local princess of the area was forbidden to ever fall in love with her. Unhappy with the decision, he decided to cast a spell on her to make her surrender to him. However, the princess, who was also a disciple of the occult learned of his plans and found a way to kill him.

Even before his death, the magician cast a dark spell on the palace which caused its doom. Despite the story surrounding the ruins, it still is a fascinating place to visit. In fact, it has also been officially promoted as a tourist destination. However, once night falls, the place becomes deserted, leaving the darkness to engulf it once again till morning comes.

D’Souza Chawl in Mahim, Mumbai is also considered as among the haunted places in India. There have been many ghost stories surrounding one particular well in the chawl which is considered to be haunted. Residents of the chawl believe that there was a woman, who while filling water from the well, plunged to her death since the well was boundary-less.

Therefore, ‘the lady of the well’ is said to haunt the area surrounding the well every night. There have been many sightings of a white apparition who many consider being the lady. However, the residents believe that the lady just walks around the area without actually harming anyone who happens to visit the area. As predicted, once the sun comes up, she vanishes into thin air only to appear again in the night. This particular place cannot be considered as a place many visitors can frequent though.

Dumas Beach in Gujarat already has an ominous ring to its name. Therefore, it is not surprising that it is considered as one of the most haunted places in India. This beach is located very near Surat, one of the developed cities of the state. This particular beach draws countless visitors almost every day as legend has it that the winds which blow fiercely come along with whispers.

In fact, it is believed that there have been many people who have lost their lives here. Also, if you are a brave heart, you can test the waters yourself by taking a midnight stroll along the beach, if you have company. If the testimonies are anything to go by, then you will also be greeted by warnings asking you to not cross a certain line while on the beach.

It is also believed that this beach was for long used as a Hindu burial ground, therefore, being the resting place of tortured souls. There have also been reports of people disappearing mysteriously and having never been found again. However, if you still want to visit the beach to do some exploring of your own, then go ahead and do so if you have the stomach for it! You will find Dumas Beach one of the most mysterious places in India.

The Shaniwarwada Fort in Pune is a historical delight in addition to being one of the ghostly places in India. In fact, there are many who are of the opinion that the story that is associated with this fort is one of the most chilling stories. Lauded for its architectural brilliance, this fort has witnessed various strange occurrences.

Legend has it that during a full moon, the level of supernatural activity increases. The mysterious story surrounding this fort talks about how a young prince was brutally murdered by one of his very own relatives in the fort. Therefore, his spirit still haunts the place and in the night, sounds of him shrieking almost violently can be heard. There are many locals who actually camp at night on the fort grounds just to hear that little boy’s scream for help. A chilling story indeed.

However, most visitors prefer to visit the fort during the morning hours as it is desirable. In fact, the fort is deserted at night except for maybe a caretaker doing the rounds.

It is very popular for its antiquated architecture, but unfortunately has no records of who built it and when. According to the sources, people who have visited this Agrasen ki Baoli claim that something invisible followed them and the faster they ran the quicker it chased. Presently this sight is being taken care of by the ASI since it has historical significance.

A little girl dressed in white, with a creepy smile has the power to play havoc in your head. Several horror movies have used such portrayals to trigger your fear. Chandan Nagar is a small area in Pune, where a young girl was murdered at an under construction site, approximately 10 years ago.

As per the sources, this girl has haunted this area and is often seen around 12 AM. Also, if you happen to come across her, she would charge at you screaming loudly. Residents and trespassers have also said that she is always seen with a doll in her hand and that she smiles back at you in case you look at her.

One of the creepiest haunted places in India is the Towers of Silence. It is situated at the Malabar hills in Mumbai. This building is like a cremation ground for the Parsi community. As per the rituals and customs, this community leave those who are dead on the rooftop of this tower, to be eaten by the vultures.

This site is said to have jinns residing in the ruins and the dark halls. Every Thursday, one can see the locals lighting candles, leaving offerings of milk and grain to appease the jinns, hoping for their wishes to come true.

Located in a little-known village called Malcha near Delhi Earth Station, this place is surrounded by forests and what is known as the Delhi Ridge. It was originally a Tughlaq era hunting lodge and currently, very little is known about its mysterious inhabitants. By merely being near the place amidst the dense forest, you can experience an eerie feeling that you just can’t shake off!

Mutiny House – Kamla Nehru Ridge, Civil Lines

Located in Kashmere Gate, this is a memorial built by the British to commemorate the death of their officers in the revolt of 1857. And now, centuries later, people have found chopped-up moving arms and legs of the deceased officials in the evenings.People have often also reported that they see a headless soldier asking for a light! It truly must be a ghastly sight for those who have witnessed it first hand.

Bhuli Bhatiyari Ka Mahal.Central Ridge Reserve Forest

In Jhandewalan lies an old hunting lodge of Tughlaq and the entry to the monument from the North-East, interestingly, is twin-gated, which is strange for a structure that is deemed ‘not so’ important. It has remained abandoned and left unoccupied for centuries and is known to be haunted with various sounds and invisible shuffling activity around this part of the ridge.

Karbala Graveyard.Karbala Lane, Lodhi Road, Karbala Road, Civil Colony, BK Dutt Colony

Karbala is a Shiite burial ground in BK Dutt Colony for the funeral of tazias, the ritual coffins of Imam Husain Ibn Ali (the prophet’s grandson). There is an eerie and gloomy ambience about this place, marked by cries and loneliness which may get to you, especially if you visit during the evenings.

The Ridge.Chauburja Marg, Kamla Nehru Ridge, Civil Lines

The Delhi Ridge, an extension of the Aravalli Hill Range in NCT is a haunting rocky and hilly forested area where some of the goriest events of history took place. One can witness firangi ghosts still hovering the ridge, marking their territory. It’s notorious for its moody ghosts and any visitors to this part of the Ridge should be very careful here as there’s reportedly no mobile network to be found here as well.

Jamali Kamali Tomb & Mosque.Ladha Sarai, Mehrauli Archeological Park Trail, Christian Colony, Mehrauli

Located within the folds of Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Jamali, the renowned Sufi saint was buried here in 1535 alongside Kamali. You get an unsettling feeling once inside the chamber of the tomb and can also experience all kinds of noises calling out to you from the nearby graves, making it unsafe to visit during night-time.

Nicholson’s Cemetery.Club Road, Ludlow Castle, Civil Lines

This is one of the oldest cemeteries in Civil Lines, dating back to the British era and there are a lot of graves of British soldiers, their wives and children buried here. As you walk inside, the first thing that strikes you is that the entire place is engulfed in pin-drop silence and often you can feel a nagging presence lurking and following you, hidden behind the huge tamarind trees and palm trees found here. We just got chills.

This highway may seem like an unlikely place to find trouble while driving but alas, don’t be so smug! Legend has it that a lady here died on the Satyawati Rail Tracks and her spirit till date haunts the car drivers here at around 2 AM. If you’re driving by looking for them, don’t be alarmed if you find her running beside your car to keep you company.

Yamuna ghat is said to be haunted and those who row their boats amid the numerous seagulls have claimed to find certain irregularities in the river water that churns without any known cause. People have also often said that they’ve seen shadows of people on the river banks only to find nothing when they’ve come closer to inspect. Now, who knows if it’s just a trick of the sunlight on water or if there really is something sinister lurking amid the water depths.

Located in Tughlakabad, this fort is said to be haunted as a Sufi Saint cursed the royal fort to always remain unoccupied, or else may herdsmen live here. The fort is surrounded by the lush jungle that provides magnificent scenery. If you’re a person who loves to wander and enjoy the beauty of nature around you, then this place is a must-go for you. Avoid going too close to the fort as people have reported citing the ghost of Sultan Tughlaq wandering nearby the Fort.

Qabristan Of Kotla.Netaji Subhash Marg, Priyadarshini Colony, Kashmere Gate

Tortured are the souls of those who die for love, One such tortured soul haunts the visitors of Kotla Qabristan. While many carry their heart on their sleeve, the ghost of General Nicholas carries his head on his arms instead. The next time you walk through the cemetery, beware of the General. And if you dare, talk to him and he’ll tell you the story of how he shot himself upon learning that his lover married someone else.

But it is tainted by the blood of many British families who fell to their death in the lake while fleeing a battle during 1857. While now the jheel is a popular lovers spot in the city, don’t be surprised if in the middle of a hot sesh you end up hearing children wailing or figures shadowing over you.

We actually believe the Chor Minar in the mix of HKV Monuments is haunted and if you heard its story you’d have a hard time believing it’s not haunted too. Legend has it that Alaudin Khilji used the 200+ holes in the Minar to display the heads of all the people he beheaded to send a message to his opposers within his empire as well externally to his opponents like the Mongols.

This abandoned house in GK 1 is said to be haunted and the neighbours have cited hearing screams and squabs from the house, phantom-like figures were also spotted by some of them. And people strolling through the Lake often complain of hearing voices of children crying and women screaming. 41.Lothian Cemetery 

Well, if you’re one of those persons who would back out if asked to take a stroll around a cemetery, then this place is not for you. Located just minutes away from Kashmere Gate, this graveyard is considered to be one of the most haunted cemeteries in the world. This cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries of Delhi and it is believed that the ghost of British officer Sir Nicholas’s roams around the graveyard. It is cited that Sir Nicholas fell in love with an Indian lady but could not be married and this resulted in Nicholas taking his own life.

42.Saraswati Kunj 

This place is not a regular horror place with abandoned forts and lakes around; rather this place is a housing society in Gurgaon that is believed to be scary. There are rumours about the place being plagued by the spirit of a 15-year-old girl that is possessed by two spirits of a man and a woman. So, the next time you wander somewhere near this housing society, better take precautions.

This factory is located in Sector 60, Noida and is believed to be plagued by the spirits. There was a time when high numbers used to work in this factory but as time passed many employees left the job because of the horrific incidents that took place with them. The factory turned into a ghostly place when a massive fire broke out in the place and more than 200 women including infants were burned to death. The management at the place has shut down a few rooms that face extreme paranormal occurrences. *shudders*
